Jones finishes third in Sandover Medal

Thursday, September 22, 2016 - 8:59 AM by Matthew Dower

Demons midfielder Clint Jones topped off a stellar season in his return to the WAFL by finishing third in the 2016 Sandover Medal count on Monday night.

Jones, 32, polled 39 votes to finish well ahead of last year’s Sandover medalist and teammate Aiden Tropiano who was the second-best Demon to poll with 20 votes.

Jones was fancied as a hot chance heading into the count but a strong finish to the season by Claremont's Jye Bolton saw him run away with the league's most prestigious award with 49 votes.

Fremantle and Peel Thunder midfielder Matt de Boer finished second, polling 42 votes from just 12 games.

Jones averaged just over 34 disposals a game in 2016 after returning to Western Australia after 149 games with St. Kilda.

Strong polling in the middle of the year when the Demons won three games in a row against East Fremantle, Claremont and Subiaco saw Jones lead after 15 rounds with 26 votes.

Jones' finish in the top three comes after Tropiano took out the award last year with 45 votes.

Liam McKenna notched up 16 votes as the third best demon on the night, while Julian Jacobs was awarded 14 votes.

Other Demons to get amongst the votes:

  • Angus Graham (8 votes)
  • Zac Fisher (7 votes)
  • Lachlan Dennis (7 votes)
  • Cody Leggett (5 votes)
  • Michael Sinclair (4 votes)
  • Dene White (3 votes)
  • Todd Stevenson (2 votes)
