PERTH DISTRICT SCHOOL AMBASSADOR'S AWARDED IN EDUCATION NIGHT OF NIGHTS'

The WAFC recently held its annual Education Function that was attended by over 250 high achieving School Ambassadors.

The annual WAFC Education Function continues to gain an important position on the WA Football event’s calendar with this year’s dinner having a ‘magic’ theme with a spellbinding performance by OLA the Magician. Special guests included AFL players Roger Hayden (FFC), Sam Butler (WCE), Bill Walker (WAFL Legend), WAFC Chairman Frank Cooper and CEO Wayne Bradshaw. The function also gave the WAFC an opportunity to welcome Coles as the new AFL SCHOOLS Partner. Coles State Marketing Manager, Colin Chantler, attended the dinner and assisted with presentations.

In addition, all competition-winning school teams were acknowledged for their efforts including WAFC Schoolboys and Schoolgirls Cup winners, Design-a-Jumper winners and Alcock Cup champions. This year a Perth District School - Wesley College successfully took out the Alcock cup for the first time since 1994 (year that Ben Cousins played).

Colin West, WAFC General Manager of Education & Development said: “This awards night is a great way to acknowledge the success of AFL programs in WA schools, which have not only achieved significant growth in participation the last two years, but also made a significant impact on student learning especially in the key areas of literacy and numeracy.

“These important outcomes have been generated by the passion and commitment of our terrific AFL School Ambassadors, in partnership with our WAFL District & Regional development staff. This prestigious dinner function provided an opportunity to recognize and reward the very best of our Ambassadors and celebrate our terrific programs and competitions,” Mr West said.

The Demons District would like to acknowledge its two award winners on the night.

Outstanding FIRST YEAR AFL School Ambassador Program

Coral Perhavec - Beckenham Primary School

Coral became an AFL School Ambassador to take football at the school to the next level. Coral organised an Eagles Rock My School visit, a follow up reading clinic in Year 1 and promoted the Eagles interactive whiteboard Literacy program.

She also organised a coaching clinic through the Perth District, took two teams to the Multicultural Football Carnival in Term 1, coordinated the Beckenham Primary School’’s Eagles Cup team and had two teams participate in the Freo Dockers Cup. Coral encouraged classes to participate in the AFL Quiz and assisted two TAFE students complete their practical coaching accreditation training.

Outstanding MULTICULTURAL AFL School Ambassador Program

Nuria Ushoroff - Australian Islamic College

Nuria was inducted as an AFL School Ambassador this year. She works in a very multicultural environment, knowing that most children have not experienced playing or learning about AFL.

During Physical Education lessons Nuria taught the basic skills and was amazed at the improvement throughout the term. The students showed joy on their faces when they told her, 'Look I can bounce the ball.' Nuria has conducted Eagles Faction Footy and organised a Dockers Cup team to attend the Perth Multicultural Carnival.

Following a successful intra-school competition, Nuria selected students and staff to play an exhibition game on the last day of term.

Code of conduct – Parents and spectators

Encourage children to participate regardless of ability

Encourage participants to always play by the rules

Never ridicule mistakes or losses

Remember that participants learn best by example. Applaud good play by all teams

Never publicly disagree with officials. If you disagree, raise the issue privately through appropriate channels

Actively discourage racial abuse

Recognise the value and importance of volunteer coaches

Remember that participants play for fun and are not miniature professionals

Condemn the use of violence in any form, be it by spectators, coaches, officials or players

Encourage players to accept the umpire's decisions

Demonstrate exemplary behaviour by not using foul language, or harassing players, coaches or officials

Smoking and the consumption of alcohol is unacceptable at junior sport

Code of conduct – Coaches and teachers

Be reasonable in your demands: consider young players' time, energy and enthusiasm levels

Avoid over-playing the talented players. The just 'average' players' need and deserve equal time. n Keep winning in perspective: maximise participation because children participate for fun and enjoyment

Stress safety: ensure that equipment and facilities are safe and appropriate for age and ability levels

Consider maturity levels: match up practice schedules, activities and degree of competition

Develop team respect: for opponents as well as for the judgement of officials and opposing coaches

Recognise the importance of injury: seek and follow the physician's advice concerning injured players

Keep informed: with sound principles of coaching and skill development, and development of children

Teach sporting behaviour: create opportunities to teach appropriate sports behaviour as well as basic skills

Get priorities right: ensure skill learning and appropriate behaviour are the priority over competition

Teach fair play: help children understand the responsibilities and implications of their freedom to choose between fair and unfair play

Armstrong to Give Umpiring a Go

On Saturday 9th July, the Demons District will recognise the importance of supporting junior umpires with the inaugural Umpiring is Everyone’s Business Carnival.

The District, in partnership with the Demons District Football Umpires Association (DDFUA), Perth Football Club, Gosnells Junior Football Club and the AFL, will help promote the Umpiring is Everyone’s Business campaign and celebrate the important role that umpires hold in Australian Rules Football.

The Umpiring is Everyone’s Business campaign focuses on using influential people within Australian Football to advocate positively about umpiring and for all participants within our game to take responsibility for their behaviour on match day.

In support of this event and its important message, Perth Football Club Captain Steve Armstrong will pick up a whistle and give umpiring a go. Armstrong played 79 games with Melbourne and West Coast in the AFL, and played a starring role in the Eagles’ 2006 Premiership. He has since played in the WAFL with the Perth Demons.

AFL Field Umpires Dean Margetts and Brett Rosebury will also attend the Carnival to mentor the DDFUA’s aspiring young umpires. Margetts and Rosebury both commenced umpiring in the Demons District and have since forged outstanding careers. Rosebury has umpired the last two AFL Grand Finals, including the historic drawn Grand Final.

The Carnival builds upon last year’s contribution to the Umpiring is Everyone’s Business Campaign- the Dean Margetts Promotional Game. Margetts returned to his original junior district and joined the DDFUA’s field, boundary and goal umpires to umpire an Under 17s game between Gosnells JFC and Kenwick JFC during the AFL split round. This event was hugely successful and was a unique experience for all involved.

Margetts is particularly proud to again lend his support to promoting the campaign within the Demons District stating that, “I am very fortunate to be able to come back to the Demons District where my playing and umpiring day’s began, to be able come back representing the AFL Umpiring Department is something I am very proud of and I hope my career can show all participants from our District, that you can make the elite system in whatever capacity you desire, if you are passionate enough about it.”

This Saturday all junior clubs will come together to play football in a fun and positive environment and in doing so will recognise the need to support and nurture umpires for the ultimate benefit of grass-roots football.

The Carnival will be held on Saturday 9th July, between 8.30am-11.30am at Sutherlands Park, Gosnells.

2012 AFL National Coaching Conference

7pm Friday 17 Feb – 4pm Sunday 19 Feb 2012
Allphones Arena, Homebush, Sydney

The AFL National Coaching Conference attracts around 500 coaches from across Australia. The 2012 conference program is aimed at giving Australian Football coaches an opportunity to access the most up-to-date coaching methods and practices.

Register now

Dates

Sydney will host the 2012 AFL National Coaching Conference from Friday 17th February to Sunday 19th February.

Please note the change of date. In the initial announcement of conference dates it was placed at the traditional time of the conference following Australia Day. In subsequent discussions with AFL NSW/ACT, and potential venues, it was decided that the conference would be better placed to coincide with the first round of the NAB Cup in association with the GWS Giants/Western Bulldogs/Collingwood round robin at Blacktown International Sports Park on Saturday 18 February. There are a number of benefits to this and elements of the conference on Saturday will be built around the event. We apologise for any inconvenience the changes have caused and are aware of the possibility that some coaches may have pre-booked flights to Sydney based on the original dates. If that is the case please call Andrew Hughes on 03 9643 1953 to discuss the situation.

AFL Umpire Coach PD Program National Conference

The AFL Umpire Coach Professional Development Program National Conference will once again be held in conjunction with the AFL National Coaches Conference. Bringing player coaches and umpire coaches together for this weekend reinforces that umpiring is everybody’s business.

Find out more about arrangements for umpire coaches attending the 2012 AFL Umpire Coach Professional Development Program National Conference

This Future Directions Report has been prepared during the period covering the latter half of the 2010 to latter half of the 2011 Football season.

The DDFUA is looking for new umpires for 2012.

If you love AFL football and want to be an important part of the game then umpiring is for you. Anyone, regardless of gender and age, can become an umpire and find it a rewarding experience.

Umpiring teaches you life skills such as tolerance, assertiveness, leadership, decision making and management.

Umpiring is a great way for both males and females to keep fit and involved in the game. It’s also a great activity to combine with playing club football.

Shannon Gover - Visit to Victoria

Recently, Shannon Gover - Indigenous Program Coordinator, visited Melbourne on a 2 week professional development trip. Below, Shannon tells us about his trip and some of the fantastic things he experienced.

My Trip to Melbourne - Shannon Gover

" The National Indigenous workshop was a great opportunity for Paul Mugambwa and myself to travel over to Victoria to meet with colleagues involved in Aboriginal programs nationally. Held over 3 days in Gariwerd (Grampians National Park) it was culturally appropriate location to hold a conference in the peaceful and beautiful bush surrounding Brambuk Aboriginal Cultural Centre in Halls Gap, 3 hours west of Melbourne.

The above schedule for the workshop stretched out to 12 hour long discussions talking about issues/challenges in our line of work. Those attending were:

Luke Jeffery AFL

Narelle Long AFL

Jason Mifsud AFL

Andrew McLeod SANFL

Xavier Clarke AFL, AFL Players Association, AFL Sportsready

Chris Johnson AFL

Julie Warren AFL

Katriina Heikkenan AFL NSW

Aaron Clark AFL VICTORIA

Brett Mansell AFL TASMANIA

James Moore SANFL

Shannon Gover WAFC

Paul Mgumbwa WAFC

Tavis Perry AFL NT

Trent Ryan AFL QLD

Rick Hanlon AFL QLD

Belinda Duarte KGI

Anzac Newman KGI

Luke Murray KGI

Kim Kruger LONG WALK FOUNDATION

Chris Heelan AFL Sportsready

Courtney Bannister AFL Sportsready

Geoff Clark – Brambuk

Over the course of the 3 days we all discussed the challenges of engaging our kids in programs and carnivals. We touched on how we would like to run more programs with a view to ensuring our state league clubs attended these carnivals.

In discussions, Jason Mifsud was talking about that the AFL would like AFL Sportsready to have more of an affiliation and to work together better. Both before, during and after the Brambuk workshop I talked with Chris and Courtney from AFL Sportsready about employment direction for WAFL Colts and League players and preparing our Indigenous players with life skills.

Kim from the Long Walk Foundation held discussions with me during and after the workshop surrounding the idea of having a “Long Walk to Brownes, or to Subiaco Oval” before a match either held during Naidoc Round or towards the WAFL finals at end of the year.

Xavier Clarke in regards to his role with the AFL Players Association discussed working with me on preparing Indigenous footballers for the AFL/life. The AFLPA got me in touch with a number of Player Development Managers from AFL clubs. They were very interested to learn that were trying to run and set up programs and to see how our footballers are coping at Perth Football Club with support and mentoring from myself. Nadia Taib is the Indigenous and Multicultural Manager at AFL PA. They invited me in to discuss how WA Youth that move to Melbourne for Football can better prepare themselves for moving away from home.

On return back to Melbourne:

On the Friday night, I saw Essendon playing Sydney in the NAB at Docklands. That weekend culminated in spending time with my family up in the Dandenong Ranges and returning to the City on the Monday for the Labour Day celebrations in the Moomba Festival down by the banks of the Yarra in Melbourne. There are bands, Indigenous dancers, rides, clowns, activities for kids and waterskiing competitions held down at the banks of the Yarra.

Monday I met up with Nick Hannett from Essendon Football Club. He is in the role of Community Manager. Essendon was holding a Family Fun Day and also he showed me around the club but we also discussed programs and how in Victoria theyre aiming to increase Indigenous Participation. A number of stalls were open for Essendon Members to engage with. Boots for All is a program aimed at Inclusiveness and theyre refurbish 2nd hand footy boots and send them to kids who otherwise would not play football because they have no boots. I plan on working closely with them and do something similar in WA.

At Essendon we talked about their Reconcilliation Plan. I also met up with Michael Lacy Community Engagement at Richmond Football Club and Jeanette Vaha’kolo who is in the Indigenous Programs Unit at City of Melbourne. We held meetings and discussed their process of forming a working party together for conceiving the RAP Plan.

Jeanette showed me a number of cultural venues in the city including the Koorie Heritage Trust and Birrarung Marr. The Trust is a visitor centre in the city with pictorial and written history of aboriginal people in this area of Victoria. Birrarung Marr is a fairly new cultural site along the banks of the Yarra. There were some sculptures and carving’s and was interesting to learn about the significance of them and what they represented.

Chris and Courtney from AFL Sportsready invited me into their offices. We discussed how the football club and WA Indigenous Youth can get involved in school based traineeships at employment opportunities. AFL Sportsready will be returning to Perth this week. I plan on meeting with them this week and will involve District Manager in the meeting later in the week.

Aaron Clark the Program Manager at AFL Victoria showed me their facilities. We discussed indigenous participation. Footy is the 3rd preferred sport amongst Victorian Koori boyz behind Basketball and Soccer. In the “home” state of football there is a big challenge ahead to boost these numbers. We spoke with a number of their staff involved in the TAC Cup Under 18s competition. Aaron would like to discuss further the idea of housing Victorian Koori Under 18s in Melbourne and engage them in the TAC Cup. Victoria is so spreadout and there is a strong idea floating around to bring all the boyz and run an Indigenous squad from the city.

Luke Jeffery – National Indigenous Program Manager took me around the facilities at AFL House in Docklands. We met a number of the high performance and coaching staff. Julie Warren and Jason Mifsud both also were there.

In summary out of my trip to Victoria, from a footy point of view there was the consensus that we organise and run more programs to engage our 13 year old’s through to 17/18 year old Indigenous kids in football. The timing of these events is crucial to stage them just prior to the state and local league development programs. And the push will be from the AFL down to the state league clubs that their club Presidents and staff need to be seen to support Indigenous football. The ideal scenario is club development staff and coaches attending our Indigenous football carnivals/programs and to include talented young footballers in their state league programs. The rewards are there for a club like Perth Football Club to develop our Indigenous talent, provide opportunities to develop their footy and their life skills. Perth have not won a WAFL premiership for a long time. Perhaps a future Sandover Medallist or Premiership captain is living in the Carlisle area or up in the Avon, or in Moora. Our talented Indigenous kids just need to see future pathways into the Perth Football Club, they need tailored support and mentoring. If we can achieve this anything is possible in the Perth District and around Western Australia.

I learnt more about the Koori culture and the significance of the possum as a totem. The use of their skins to keep warm in colder months, the meat to eat and the skins sewn together to play Marngrook. Marngrook is an aboriginal game from Western Victoria where possum skin was sewn around animal bladder and kicked around in groups. Some say this is where Tom Wills the forefather of the AFL got the idea to “invent” footy."

SNESA Saints teaching migrant teens how to play footy

Amateur football in the Demons district is set to take on a multicultural flavour this weekend with the SNESA Football Club launching a program to teach migrant teens the game of Aussie Rules.

In association with the WA Football Commission, the Demons District and Communicare, SNESA will be signing up teens in the Canning area to join in a six-week introductory football course, opening the doors wide open for anyone to try out our native game.

SNESA president Nick Rynne said the program is very basic, with a focus on key skills such as kicking, marking and handballing.

"Having grown up in a small Queensland town where AFL was virtually nonexistent, I know how hard it can be to try and learn a new game from scratch," he said.

"There are plenty of families in the Canning area who are new to the country and I'm sure would love to play footy but don't know the first thing about the game. Hopefully this will encourage them to come down and have a go.

"It's very basic so there's no need to have played - or even watched - footy before."

The free program kicks off with a sign-up day this Sunday, 10am at Queens Park Reserve on Treasure Rd in Queens Park.

Information Flyer

Mother's Day Junior Carnival a great success

All junior players from the Perth District competed in the annual Junior Gala day on the Mother's Day weekend just gone. Over 1000 players participated in the fantastic event that sees teams from all 12 junior clubs across 3 different age groups (Yr4 , 5 & 6) play in a round robin style. Once again, this year the event was held at Higgins Park, home of the mighty Victoria Park Raiders, and we thank Simon Gallagher and his hard working team of volunteers for putting on the magnificient day.

To make the day even more special for the kids involved, Perth FC players attended throughout the morning signing autographs, handing out prizes including stickers and footballs to players competing. Ross Young, captain of the Perth FC, who was present on the day said, " it is a great opportunity to give something back to the community, and to see the kids running around and enjoying their footy, takes you back to when you were that age and footy was all about the enjoyment."

From the district development team, thanks to everyone for making the special effort on mother's day, and we hope that the rest of the season is an enjoyable one.
